A Complete Guide to Investment Castinginvestment casting

What is Investment Casting?

Are you planning to build parts or even complete products? It is time you think about investment casting.

Or, probably you are wondering about how to use investment casting in your production process.

Investment casting or lost wax casting is a metalworking technique that allows you to create molds and finished pieces out of wax with intricate designs.

These wax castings are then coated with a refractory material called a “slurry,” which is a mixture of ceramic and binding agents.

They are then placed in a hot furnace and burned away, leaving a mold from which copies can be made. The molten metal is then poured into the mold, and the mold is broken apart when the metal has cooled.

The metal casting is then finished with a process called “finishing” to smooth out any imperfections in the surface of the casting.

The metal is then ready for further processing, such as machining or electroplating. Investment casting is also commonly referred to as “lost wax casting” or “wax casting.”

How does Investment Casting Work?

Investment casting begins with the creation of a wax model. The model is created in a design program and then a mold is built around the model.

Wax is used as the model material because it can be easily removed once the mold is built.

The mold is built with a refractory material, which is heated and then allowed to harden. Once the mold is ready, a slurry is applied to the inside of the mold.

The slurry is made of a mixture of ceramic particles, binding agents, and water.

The wax model is removed from the mold, and the mold is placed in a furnace. Molten metal is then poured into the mold.

The metal flows through the slurry and into the mold. The mold is then broken apart and the part is finished.

As you see, the process of investment casting is not complex in any way, yet the products are always of high quality.

When do we use investment casting

Investment casting is an excellent choice for metal parts that require intricate designs and small-batch production.

Part design – Complex metal parts can be difficult to create using other casting techniques. A single part can take several days to cast in a single piece ingot, whereas investment casting may only take a day or two.

Volume production – Investment casting is ideal for low-volume production since it’s easy to create molds and the cost is low. The cost of a single-piece ingot casting, on the other hand, is high.

Design freedom – As you can see above, investment casting gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to designing your part.

Advantages of Investment Casting

– Large design freedom – With most casting techniques, your design will be limited by the type of metal you use and the ability of the foundry to cast it. Investment casting, on the other hand, allows you to create any design you want.

– High-quality parts – Investment casting produces high-quality parts because the molten metal flows into the mold through the slurry. The slurry, made of ceramic particles, is designed to harden the mold and give the metal a solid place to land.

– Ease of setup – Investment casting is easy to set up, especially when compared to other casting techniques.

– Low-cost tooling – The cost of creating molds for investment casting is low.

The Disadvantages of investment casting

– Longer lead times – Investment casting takes longer to produce parts than other casting techniques.

 – Longer design process – Because you have so much design freedom with investment casting, the design process may take longer. You’ll have to plan for the extra time in your project schedule.

– More complex – Investment casting is more complex than other casting techniques. It’s important to work with a foundry that can produce the type of parts you want.

Investment casting quotation and price

The investment casting process can be used to create many different types of custom parts, including jewelry and small metal parts.

The cost of investment casting will depend on a variety of factors, including the total volume of parts you need, the complexity of the design, and the material used.

To get a price quotation for investment casting, you’ll first need to create a wax model of your part and send it to a foundry.

The foundry will then create a mold using your model and create a quotation based on the volume, complexity of the design, and the amount and type of material used.

Compare investment casting to die casting

Both investment casting and die casting are used to create metal parts, but they’re very different processes.

Die casting is similar to investment casting in that it uses a mold made from a refractory material. The difference between the two processes is that the molten metal in die casting enters a closed cavity.

In other words, the molten metal does not flow through a slurry.

Die casting is typically used for low-cost, high-volume production, whereas investment casting is used for low-volume production of high-quality parts.

Industries served by investment casting

Investment casting is used in a wide variety of industries, including jewelry, automotive, aerospace, and medical.

The process is popular in these industries because it can be used to create intricate designs that can’t be produced using other casting techniques.

Notable industries that use investment casting include jewelry, aerospace, and medical.
